"current" banned breeds for Ecuador

My name is Phyllis and my husband is Matt. We are planning on retiring to Vilcabamba Ecuador in February next year. We visited in January 2024. We loved it.

We are making plans to move but have run into something that could change everything. We have two pitbull mixes that were rescues. They're not aggressive at all. I cannot find anywhere on line that states the "current" banned breeds for Ecuador. Does anyone have recent experience or know of somewhere I can ge the most up-to-date information?

Thank you.

Phyllis

@phyllisvail49   I don't know of any online or legal information information, but I do have friends in Cotopaxi Province who have been raising pitbulls for a long time and again theirs are non-aggressive and I don't think they've been visited by anybody to say they cannot have them. They don't regularly walk them out on the streets but they do sell their puppies. Also even in Quito where I'm now living you will see at least Pitbull crosses being walked on leashes publicly.  You should investigate particularly any regulations regarding importing dogs but I suspect that the detailed management of breeds in Ecuador is not an issue at the moment.

According to several sources you can find on the internet, Pitbulls and Rottweilers are two breeds prohibited from being brought into Ecuador.  This site below lists only Pitbulls and Rottweilers as being prohibited from importation, as of February 2023:

This site below lists these breeds as prohibited:   Pitbull, Rottweiler, Doberman, Bullmastiff, Gran perro japonés, Dogo argentino, Fila brasileño, Tosa inu.

I recommend you contact Agrocalidad, the ministry in Ecuador responsible for overseeing importation of animals, to have them give you the official government position:

I suggest sending emails to any/all of the addresses in the document at the last link below, to see if you can get a definitive answer.  Your email should be in Spanish and in a non-confrontational style seeking information respectfully.  You can do a search for this phrase for help in composing a formal email:
