Job in the Netherlands

Hello everyone. I am a Speech Language Therapist from Colombia. Currently, I'm doing a master's in Deglutology in Leuven Belgium. Since my boyfriend lives in the Netherlands I'd like to find a job there but I am not a dutch speaker. Does anyone know if I could find an English private practice or perhaps an English clinic? I know that I could work in the Netherlands since I will have a degree from a recognized international institution which is KE LEUVEN.

If someone knows please let me know.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I shan't pretend to know anything about your specialist field of Deglutology, but a quick use of the Internet has told me what it means; there is a dearth of work in the field in the Netherlands.  Speech therapy is better, but I think you're right in assuming that speaking Dutch would be a critical aspect of it.  I just asked my wife (a Dutch medical professional) and she thinks that local language ability would be a significant aspect of any work in the public sector, so private practice seems to be the way ahead.

I just checked the BIG register and Speech Therapy doesn't appear to be protected, so your not going to hit the Dutch language barrier in getting your diploma recognised.  Speech Therapist in Dutch is "Logopedist".  I just logged into LinkedIn and typed Speech Therapist  Netherlands in the search function and got some hits (link); so here's my first bit of advice, use LinkedIn to reach out to your peers and speak to people actually doing this work in the Netherlands and find out who is hiring and where, more importantly, if they know of any sites taking on English speakers.  Perhaps also ask around the University in Belgium, and see what contacts they may have.

I wish you the best of luck and hope this has helped.

Besides if you can work in the Netherlands you have to think about a more permanent resident permit and how to achieve this.

Your future employer need to do all the arrangements of a working permit as well.

You can apply for both of it but I advise you to visit the website of the immigration to get the best information based on your situation:

Best of luck 🤞

Hi,

My girlfriend is a speech therapist with a university diploma from Greece and we moved in the Netherlands in September. She has already started a company with KVK number as a self employed speech therapist and is giving speech therapy sessions in greek for children of greek expat families.

But she would like to be able to get contracted with health insurances as a logopedist so her sessions could be reimbursed by the insurance of her clients. We saw that an AGB number and KP diploma registration is needed but we have trouble finding more info on this because we don't know the dutch language yet.

So basically, what is the difference between a KP and a BIG diploma registration which you mentioned above? If you might have a lead where we could search for more about KP diploma registration or BIG registration please let us know, this would be extremely helpful for us.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

A quick Google search tells me that the KP diploma is related to the field of Paramedic, so I'm not sure of the relevance to speech therapy. The AGB code is an identity code, you'll read more about it at this link (in English).

I think your issue is trying to use what is the Dutch Medical Insurance scheme for what is not regarded by them as a medical activity.  I'm not an expert in this and could be wrong; my advice would be to reach out to Dutch speech therapists and ask them if/how they do it.

I hope this helps.
